a weekend away, in new york

For those of you who know me, you know I love my hood, so here is the school behind my former residence, and only a few blocks from my current one. I am telling you, Washington Heights is my home away from home. It took me like 5 years to become Mexican. How long do you think it will take me to become Dominican?

Sunday involved several of my favorite past times: Walking through the city, trying something new , and beating the hell out of a dead horse. Central Park was lovely, if not a little chilly on the Lord's day and row boating is something I would recommend, as it is secluded in a public space, affordable, and entertaining for sure. Sometimes I love New York. Sometimes I question my sanity.

Last weekend was a beautiful early Spring New York weekend and I intended to take full advantage of it, as my Jamaican-inspired work schedule has yet to commence. After a long, painful North Eastern Winter little feels better than feeling the actual sun on your rapidly aging face.

At the suggestion of a friend I met in prison, or at a former employer's demonic business, its basically the same thing, I had a romantic evening in downtown . A stroll along the river with no floating gangster bodies in sight set the tone for our ride on the Staten Island Ferry at sunset. It is here I discovered that a Saturday evening is when when the SI'ers utilize the Ferry's lounge like bathroom to its fullest to recreate the early 80's with hair and face, and not in a good way! Banana clips are back! Did you know?

Just because I cannot currently afford to GO to Asia to sample their cuisine does not mean that I cannot enjoy a good, underground hole in the wall Indonesian/Malaysian eatery where I only recognized half of the dishes. The slurping of fellow diners really made the experience authentic, so thanks to the Asians in the US for keeping their native table habits in tack.

Out till 11, I felt accomplished and went home to read The Bell Jar, which I totally thought was about me, till I realized the bitch was going crazy...

3 flights. 2 hospitals. 24 hours.

Last week I did the kind of traveling nobody likes to do. I went home to California to see an ailing family member. A surreal experience to say the least, watching the end of a life cycle is much more strange and difficult than watching the beginning. That being said, here are there very few shots I took on my whirlwind trip home.

in an attempt...

In an attempt to continue to keep up and establish myself as a travel photographer and a travel "blogger" (man, i hate that word), I decided to document my travels from Washington Heights to Harlem. A mere 40 blocks or so, but a world of difference.

It was a beautiful weekend and Spring is finally showing it's mercy on those of us foolish enough to live on this brutal coast. When the weather permits, there is little I like more than to strap on some spandex, press play on some good strutting jams and walk...
